Spoke with director Ira Sachs on his incredible new movie, Love is Strange, about getting old while gay. Some choice quotes:
“You know, I’m in part interested in this big change in gay life, how laws affect who we are, educate us. If my earlier relationships were so much about two people lying to each other, it wasn’t completely our fault: the whole world told my generation of gay men, in general, to lie. But I don’t anymore.”

“I came out of the closet at 16, but you know, it turns out life puts you in so many other closets that I had to find my way out of, too.”

“My hope is that every gay man in America takes his mom to see Love Is Strange.”

In an overly manicured media and publicity climate, there’s something radical about being a jerk, and Del Rey comes across variously as jealous, petty, ambitious, egotistical, self-destructive, obsessive, and narcissistic, all while being insanely catchy and memorable.  ”
wrote this with the basic premise pretty much that i just really feel strongly that lana del rey paved the way for fka twigs—i’m super invested in re-framing lana as a trailblazer and i’m here to stick up for her right to be a total asshole with her image (which she is) as long as she creates totally compelling art out of it. quite simply, i do not think the compact digital weirdness of twigs would exist without lana—lana really re-imagined the idea of a female music video artist in the internet age, and i hope we can, at this point, acknowledge that
